Imagine being part of a team that creates breakthrough solutions with Pega, a platform that pushes the boundaries of digital innovation. At BPM Company, you get the chance not only to grow technologically, but also to actually make an impact at the organizational level. In this blog, Jan Willem van Asperen, Consultancy Director at BPM Company, shares his experiences with the dynamic and challenging world of Pega consulting.
Starting in an uncluttered world
The Pega platform is often deployed with medium to large organizations. It often starts with a specific challenge around digital innovation that needs a solution. That means the deployment of Pega starts very modestly, with one or a few teams focusing on a specific domain. In that phase, everything is still nice and clear, and teams can fully focus on their project and the tasks it entails.
The growth of Pega in the organization
In our experience, as time goes on, the use of Pega within an organization expands. Pega is an enterprise case management development platform, and eventually every organization starts using it more and more. Pega’s role in the business thus increases and the number of development teams grows with it. At that point, it is very important to pay sufficient attention to knowledge exchange and the development of shared components. Because the unique thing about working with Pega is that, within an organization, you are all operating on the same platform.
Shared functionalities
Those shared components contribute greatly to the value the Pega platform can deliver to the organization. Examples include components for logging into an application and security features. These basic elements are essential for virtually any application. But so are other commonly used functionalities, such as retrieving customer data from system A or obtaining product information from system B. This modular approach allows us to ensure efficiency and consistency within the platform. When done right, this leads to faster development and a coherent user experience.
Potential pitfalls
I don’t say for nothing: if you do it right. It is very important to think ahead and be proactive. If you don’t make uniform agreements on how to work from the beginning, pay attention to quality assurance and the development of those generic components, things can quickly get messy. If teams tend toward an “every-man-for-himself” mentality, this may seem efficient in the short term, but in the long run you won’t get the maximum efficiency and desired quality and value out of the Pega platform that way. It is important to avoid these pitfalls and take an integrated approach to leverage the full potential of Pega.
The important role of the Pega consultant
This makes it clear how important the role of the Pega (change) consultant is. Without common policies and direction, the engine of Pega use in an organization will falter, resulting in increasing problems, costs or dissatisfaction. A Pega (change) consultant helps the customer organize working with Pega properly (again). Larger organizations often set up a Pega Center of Excellence, which promotes standards, best practices and reuse. This ensures that an organization takes maximum advantage of the capabilities of the Pega platform.
